PAOLO THORSEN-NAGEL(*1985, Chicago) is a German-American guitarist, sound artist, and occasional filmmaker. His work is informed by disparate musical styles and artistic interests, ranging from jazz, new music, field recordings, and electronic productions to installations and films. In his solo-project Mystics, he concentrates on the materiality of sound and its relationship to physical space. Through the use of loops, delays, and prepared guitar, multi-layered soundscapes materialize, evoking different temporal registers. Often using just a reduced set of composed elements, Thorsen-Nagel’s performances convey a magnetic stream of consciousness that infiltrates both the space and the audience.Recent projects include various location-specific solo concerts tied to visual art exhibitions. These include the residency and performance program “Pleasure Principles,” Fondation Lafayette, Paris (2014); “Learning From Warsaw,” Kunstverein Zürich in Warsaw (2013); “S.S.O.R.,” with Adriana Lara, Kunsthalle Basel (2013); “La Rada,” with Annette Amberg, Locarno (2013); and a featured performance in Alexandra Bachzetsis’s “Etude,” dOCUMENTA 13, Kassel (2012). In addition, Thorsen-Nagel’s recent studio releases include those with the experimental rock band Aie ca Gicle (Speak Easy, A Tree in a Field Records, 2013) and the Paolo Thorsen-Nagel Projekt (And On, Material Records, 2013).

BIRGIT UHLER & CHRISTOPH SCHILLER The indispensable duo of Christoph Schiller and Birgit Ulher proves to be an excellent combination of the art of listening with the art of creating an unfamiliar, yet compelling world of sonic events. Each meeting maps out new territories, new transitory structures of sounds that responds to the material potential of their instruments. Convincingly they mould it into a presence with great awareness and acoustic attention. Johan Redin, Nutida Musik, Sound of Music, Sweden
Christoph Schiller was born in 1963 in Stuttgart. He studied fine arts at the Kunstakademie Stuttgart and HfBK Hamburg. He later studied piano with Daniel Cholette and music theory in Basel. He has been playing concerts of improvised music on piano since 1987. In recent years the piano has been abandoned in favour of the lighter spinet, for which he has developed specific playing techniques which are influenced by inside piano techniques. Besides keyboard instruments his work with the voice has become increasingly important. He lives in Weil am Rhein and Basel.

Birgit Ulher studied the visual arts, which still has an important influence on her music. Since the early eighties she has been involved in free improvisation and experimental music. Since then she has ‘established a distinguished grammar of sounds beyond the open trumpet sound’ (jazzdimensions.de). Her work includes solo-performances, as well as dance-projects, beside her working-groups she plays often in occasional / once only groupings and collaborates with improvisers all over the world.

FRITZ WELCH is a drummer, percussionist and vocalist determined to stretch the escalator of possibilities into the bloodshot eye of results. He currently plays with Asparagus Piss Raindrop, FvRTvR, The Final Five, Lambs Gamble, Tripping Landlocked Infidels and With Lumps. Welch was formerly a member of Peeesseye, Ki (with Tamio Shiraishi and Michiko) and Wi77!N6. He has played with Liene Rozite, Ilan Volkov, Blood Stereo, Julia Scott, Id M Theftable, Evan Parker, Nicolas Field, Usurper and Tony Conrad among many other killer musicians. A longtime Brooklynite of Texas origins, he is now pleased to be based in Glasgow.
