ANDREA PARKINS (US) PHILL NIBLOCK (US) ALAN LICHT (US)

20:00 Kunsthalle Basel

Andrea Parkins (electric accordion, objects, electronics) Andrea Parkins performs (broken acts), live re-imagining of her immersive site-based work, Faulty (broken orbit). Parkins’ (broken acts) is an exploration of mic’ed surfaces and amplified quotidian objects, activated into movement and then layered against a shifting, slowly settling field of accordion-generated electronic feedback and live-processed re-sampled instruments. With (broken acts), Parkins builds elaborate and precarious sonic systems in the manner of inventor Rube Goldberg’s circuitous machines, which Parkins cites as inspiration for her customized sound processing as well as her sonic architecture: emphasizing idiosyncrasy and awkwardness, movement from fracture to stillness, tenuous states and the threat of things falling apart.

American minimalist composer Phill Niblock has been active in his multimedia endeavors since the mid-’60s. His music itself is characterized by multiple tones sounding simultaneously for long stretches, creating a very dense, seemingly static sound. He has been the director of the Experimental Intermedia Foundation in New York since 1985, which he participated in as an artist/member since 1968. He has produced music and Intermedia presentations at EI since 1973, and is the curator of EI’s XI Records label.
